Understanding connectivity of pearl oyster populations within Tuamotu atoll semi-closed lagoons: Cumulative insight from genetics and biophysical modelling approaches

چکیده

Connectivity affects species demography, (meta)population dynamics, evolution, phylogeny and biogeography. Various methodological approaches are applied to measure connectivity. Biophysical modelling can explore systematically the influence of atmospheric, oceanic ecological forcing, while genetics measures connectivity patterns within sampling strategy limit. In Pacific Ocean pearl farming lagoons, activity relies on spat collecting black lipped oyster Pinctada margaritifera occurring after larval dispersal phase, which follows spawning from wild or farmed populations. 3D genomic studies have both separately brought insights within-lagoon origin spats. Here, we combined previous results with new realistic biophysical scenarios elucidate in Ahe Atoll lagoon. When combined, identified weather sequence likely explaining realized observations. We discuss strengths, weaknesses, opportunities threats combining these two considering specific demographic questions.

Relationships between bacterioplankton and phytoplankton biomass, production and turnover rate in Tuamotu atoll lagoons

As a part of a multi-disciplinary study of the biological production in 12 Tuamotu atoll lagoons, we assessed phytoplankton and bacterioplankton biomass and production. The only consistently significant differences were those existing between lagoons, without any other spatial or seasonal signal. Compared with the surrounding oligotrophic ocean, lagoons displayed an increase in trophic status r...

Pearl oysters Pinctada margaritifera grazing on natural plankton in Ahe atoll lagoon (Tuamotu Archipelago, French Polynesia).

In atoll lagoons of French Polynesia, growth and reproduction of pearl oysters are mainly driven by plankton concentration. However, the actual diet of black-lip pearl oysters Pinctada margaritifera in these lagoons is poorly known. To fill this gap, we used the flow through chamber method to measure clearance rates of P. margaritifera in Ahe atoll lagoon (Tuamotu Archipelago, French Polynesia)...

Influence of plankton concentration on gametogenesis and spawning of the black lip pearl oyster Pinctada margaritifera in Ahe atoll lagoon (Tuamotu Archipelago, French polynesia).

Pearl culture industry represents one of the dominant business sector of French Polynesia. However, it still entirely relies on unpredictable spat collection success. Our aim was to assess the influence of natural plankton concentration fluctuations on maturation and spawning of the black lip pearl oyster Pinctada margaritifera, during a 4 months survey conducted in Ahe atoll lagoon. Plankton c...

Review of solutions for 3D hydrodynamic modeling applied to aquaculture in South Pacific atoll lagoons.

A workshop organized in French Polynesia in November 2004 allowed reviewing the current methods to model the three-dimensional hydrodynamic circulation in semi-enclosed atoll lagoons for aquaculture applications. Mollusk (e.g. pearl oyster, clam) aquaculture is a major source of income for South Pacific countries such as French Polynesia or Cook Islands. This aquaculture now requires a better u...

Larval Dispersal Modeling of Pearl Oyster Pinctada margaritifera following Realistic Environmental and Biological Forcing in Ahe Atoll Lagoon

Studying the larval dispersal of bottom-dwelling species is necessary to understand their population dynamics and optimize their management. The black-lip pearl oyster (Pinctada margaritifera) is cultured extensively to produce black pearls, especially in French Polynesia's atoll lagoons. This aquaculture relies on spat collection, a process that can be optimized by understanding which factors ...
